Coldwell Banker Hero of the Year, Sabrina Cohen, Shares her Story

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and Coldwell Banker is proud to celebrate the contributions of one of its affiliated agents with disabilities.

Coldwell Banker agent Sabrina Cohen highlights an eye-opening fact: There are 57 million Americans living with disabilities – approximately 20 percent of the U.S. population. It underlines why the creation of more inclusive environments in our workplaces, communities and homes are a benefit to everyone. “We are all more successful when we can combine our unique strengths every day,” said Cohen.

Amidst her efforts, Cohen was routinely contacted by individuals who wanted to move to Miami Beach to enjoy its beauty but needed advice on finding accessible homes. Realizing she was in a unique position to help, Cohen earned her real estate license and affiliated with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. Today, Cohen said that more than 50 percent of her clients are disabled and generally require accessible homes. Finding those homes can sometimes be a challenge for buyers, as real estate listings don’t always call out accessible features, said Cohen.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

"REAL Trends interviewed Sabrina Cohen from Miami Beach, who is an individual with a disability that is thriving as a real estate professional."

Her work with individuals and families through the Foundation saw her fielding calls from those looking for a home that was accessible. “I saw a gap that no one was filling, so I got my real estate license in 2016,” she says.
She says that many real estate sales associates think they aren’t equipped to help those with disabilities, but, “My advice is that you have to ask questions to get to know them and their needs. Don’t make assumptions. They’ll tell you what you need to know to put you on the right path.”

It’s been over 20 years since Coldwell Banker agent Sabrina Cohen was in the car accident that left her a wheelchair user as the result of a spinal cord injury. Today, with her portable ramp in tow, she doesn’t find it difficult to get her wheelchair into most homes, but that isn’t always the case for other disabled individuals.

Her first sale, a condo located in Miami, just closed on January 10, 2017. Her client, Anson James, requested wheelchair-accessible accommodations and Cohen identified the property to fit James’ needs.
